Training Trip – Day 1 & 2

I left Greenville on Monday at 2:00 and flew to Washington Dulles. It is a huge airport and I felt like I was walking forever to my next gate. When I arrived the 777 was already there and ready to make the flight to Frankfurt Germany. Boarding was quick and easy due to the fact that my company covers the upgrade to economy plus (more legroom and earlier boarding). For some reason after everyone had boarded we were still not leaving the gate. This was due to a passenger’s pets creating an issue in the holding area of the plane and they had to be removed. After the pets were removed the owners wanted to get off the flight. I guess federal regulations requires that no luggage is allowed on board unless the owner is also on board so then we had to wait for the airline to find the pet owners luggage. Finally after a short 30 minute wait we were on our way (not too long of a wait but it later caused my luggage to miss my next connection). The flight was not too bad but as usual I was not able to sleep very well. I had a window seat and resting my head on the freezing wall wasn’t working too well.

Tuesday morning we landed in Frankfurt after descending down through a snow cloud. Frankfurt airport is also very nice with a huge mall area right after security. I cleared customs with my Dutch passport (no lines for EU passports) and quickly found my next gate. After a quick hopper flight I was in FMO (Flughafen Münster Osnabrück). Due to the prior delay issue with the animals and the owners and their luggage, my luggage did not make it to the plane during the shorter layover. I filled out some paperwork and hoped that it was only in Frankfurt and not still somewhere like Greenville, SC. Luckily I packed some extra clothes in my carry-on. I picked up the car (VW Touran – almost like a minivan looking car so not the most glamorous) and headed to work in Dielingen.

I arrived at work shortly before lunch. I checked some email  and started to get acclimated to my new surroundings since my new boss was still on the way back from a skiing trip to the alps and was not expecting me until Wednesday. For lunch I had a large meatball (no sauce) with pommes frites and apfelsaftschorle. The rest of the day was filled with meeting new co-workers and getting set up with my new job.

That night I checked into the hotel where my bags were waiting for me! Shortly after, I met up with Philip (a good friend who was an intern at ZF Duncan the same time I was and also flew across the Atlantic to come to our wedding) and we went to Historischer Weihnachtsmarkt Osnabrück (Christmas Market). It is a ton of Christmas vendors and decorations all throughout the city of Osnabrück. It is best known for Glühwein which is a warm wine with spices. Very good for the cold nights. Afterwards we went to a Tapas Restaurant and I got the meat platter with Chorizo, some other meats, Olives, Bread and Cheese. Everything was delicious. After I returned to the hotel and promptly fell to sleep.

Moving Day

Yesterday the moving company arrived around 8:45 am with 6 guys. They made quick work of our small apartment and were completed by 12:30. Everything had to be wrapped or boxed since it is an overseas transfer. Last night we made sure to make a Walmart run to pick up ranch seasoning and onion soup mix (2 things we can’t live without) and some other items to ship on the boat.

This morning the moving guys came back (only 4 this time) and started filling the 20 foot container that was brought in. Hopefully it was all packed well and we are praying that it all arrives in one piece. Watching the boxes of plates and glassware bounce down two flights of stairs on dolly’s was a little stressful. Again they finished up quickly in around 3 hours. The container is headed for Charleston to ship over to Bremen Germany.

Look and See Trip

We arrived after a packed flight on Sunday into Amsterdam. The weather was foggy when we landed but it quickly burned off and turned into a sunny warm day. We rented a VW Golf from Hertz and drove to Osnabruck on the A1. I quickly had a large smile on my face when we entered Germany where there are no speed limits (nothing crazy… don’t worry). It was a 2.5 hour drive and we got to see a lot of cows, agricultural farms and not a whole lot else . We arrived in Osnabruck and found a cafe/bar in downtown (called Cafe Bar Celona). We both had a Cafe Americano but quickly realized that the restaurant did not take credit cards. I ventured out to find an ATM while Katie guarded our coffees and made sure we did not get arrested on our first day for “dining and dashing”. After a lot of walking and exploring the area we returned to the car and drove around the city. It is very historical with many old buildings as well as two large churches (still trying to find out the denomination). We went and checked in a dropped off our bags. We avoided taking a nap by going back out for more exploring. We ate dinner at Balou which had good beer and typical Germany food. I had “Schnitzle” – Pork Cutlet (not sure on spelling yet) covered in melted cheese and grilled onions with pom frites (also not sure on spelling but they are fries). Katie had Spaghetti with meat sauce. After a long time of waiting for the check we headed back to the hotel and promptly fell asleep.
Yesterday was an early start to get up to ZF Dielingen to meet my new bosses and the team. Before we left, we ate a quick breakfast of cold cuts, cheese, amazing bread, smoked salmon, fruit, coffee and fresh juice. The plant is about 30 minutes North of Osnabruck and is a pretty drive through the country. Katie joined me and we were introduced to roughly half the CYPP team (Chassis Systems Production Planning group). The rest were out of the office on vacation or business travel. Everyone is very nice and all speak English. We left around lunch time and went to a local hotel Teimanns. It was rather fancy and we had amazing food. I had lamb chops with potatoes au gratin with the most amazing ratatouille that I have ever had. Katie had Sol fish with new potatoes and a salad . We also quickly learned that you have to order water without gas since we do not prefer it yet. Afterwards we traveled to Bramsche to look at a large Ikea-like furniture store called Staas. We also stopped in a MediaMarkt to look at electronics that we will need to replace. It is the German version of Best Buy. It seems like TV’s here are much more expensive by a couple hundred more on average. We returned to the hotel to get changed for dinner. For dinner we met with my boss’, boss’ boss (you get what I mean) at Hausbrauerei Rampendahl. He is the vice president over Chassis Systems Production and Logistics. We had very authentic German food. I had chicken in a white sauce that had brusselsprout leaves and a potato cake with fruit. Katie had pork in a gravy sauce with new potatoes and a salad. Katie also had a dark beer with peach fruit in it. They called it a German Fruit Punch and she liked it a lot. We walked around a little after and returned to the hotel.
This morning we had another great breakfast with more cold cuts, cheese, boiled eggs, more bread and salmon, coffee, kiwi/orange juice and even some eggs and bacon / sausage. We got a tour of the ZF site this morning and we are about to go to the onsite canteen for lunch. The afternoon included more exploring.

Welcome
